afssa proposes sheep ban

french food safety agency afssa on wednesday proposed toughening a ban on lamb from flocks infected with scrapie because of concern that such meat could also be infected with mad cow disease and so threaten human health. in a four-page opinion, afssa recommended banning from the food chain all sheep aged one year or older that come from flocks infected with scrapie. the agency also maintained a controversial recommendation issued in february that all sheep intestines be banned from the food chain as a precaution against mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (bse). more

sale boosts basf profits but earnings fall

german chemicals maker basf said on tuesday its net profit rose 21 per cent in the third quarter from the same period a year earlier, boosted by the sale of its drug unit. but earnings from ongoing business fell sharply because of the slowing world economy, the company said. net profit rose to 123 million euros ($111 million) from 101 million euros in previous year\'s july-september period, the company said. more

as the fourth world trade organisation drew to a close on wednesday trade ministers from 142 countries reached a final agreement on a new round of global trade talks after their six-day meeting in doha, qatar. wto member governments approved a work programme - which they called \"broad and balanced\" - that includes negotiations on a range of subjects and other tasks for the coming years. \"the success of our conference at this difficult time is … especially important as a reaffirmation of the determination of the international community to work together to respond to these challenges for a better future,\" said conference chairman, qatari finance, economy and trade minister youssef hussain kamal. more

dairy crest consumer food profits rise 76 per cent

britain\'s dairy crest group reported a 39 per cent increase in half-year profits on wednesday and its shares moved higher after the nation\'s biggest dairy firm gave an upbeat outlook. the company, which markets brands such as clover spreads, cathedral city cheddar cheese, frijj flavoured milk and yoplait yoghurts and desserts, said it was confident of hitting a forecast made by its house broker of 20 per cent annual earnings growth. more

ajinomoto in food venture

ajinomoto co inc , japan\'s largest seasoning maker, and another japanese food manufacturer, house foods corp , said on wednesday that they had set up a chinese joint venture to produce ready-to-eat foods. the venture, shanghai house ajinomoto foods co ltd, was set up on october 31 and plans to start producing at the end of next year a packaged curry that has been pre-heated, which the partners said would be appealing to chinese consumers. more
