denmark bowed to european union complaints on monday and said it would lift a 20-year-old ban on canned beer and soft drinks. the ban will end on january 23 on condition that retailers charge a deposit of 1.50 danish crowns ($0.18) per can, as on bottles, to ensure that customers return the empty cans to shops, the environment ministry said. the move, expected following centre-right parties\' victory in a parliamentary election last year, is likely to allow increased imports of beer and danish brewers say they are prepared.

the european commission has approved the creation of a joint venture called european salt company (esco) between german company kali & salz ag and solvay s.a. of belgium. esco will combine the parent companies\' businesses for the production and sale of salt thereby creating europe\'s second largest producer for crystallised salt behind akzo of the netherlands. after investigation the commission maintains that the concentration would not impede effective competition in europe.

french industrial output remained flat in november after hefty drops in the preceding two months, while manufacturing output continued to slide, but by a gentler 0.3 per cent, french statistics office insee said on tuesday. insee said total industrial output, excluding construction, was unchanged compared to october and revised the scale of the october fall to 0.8 per cent from the 0.7 percent dip initially reported.
