dutch food group wessanen said on tuesday it was possibly interested in buying swiss novartis\' health and nutrition brands, reuters reports. \"we are interested (in buying those brands) based on the information we currently have,\" board member koos kramer told reuters. novartis said on 4 february this year that it had put some of its health and nutrition brands, such as ovaltine and isostar, up for sale in a bid to focus on developing new medicines.

scientists in wales have new evidence confirming the long-held belief that cod liver oil is good for the joints, reports bbc online. the cardiff-based researchers say taking a cod-liver oil supplement could delay or even reverse the damage done to joint cartilage and the inflammatory pain caused by arthritis. they have also suggested that it may even delay joint replacement surgery. severe arthritis causes significant disability for over three million people in the uk, and these are not all old people - one in 1,000 children suffers from arthritis too.

the uk joint health claims initiative (jhci) this week adopted and published advice from leading scientists promoting the role of fruit and vegetables in helping to avoid stomach, lung and bowel cancer and contributing to a healthy lifestyle. the advice comes after four months of study by seven leading scientists from the jhci expert committee. the researchers investigated available evidence on the possible relationship between fruit and vegetables and health.

public anxiety over gm foods may be waning, according to the latest survey into attitudes towards food commissioned by the uk food standards agency. a recent story in the grocer magazine said that of 3,120 people interviewed in autumn 2001, only 5 per centspontaneously mentioned gm as a concern. the percentage of respondents whoexpressed concern only after being prompted dropped from 43 per cent in 2000 to 38 per cent in 2001.
