kraft bids for united biscuits

north america\'s biggest food maker kraft foods has approached the consortium of shareholders that owns britain\'s united biscuits with a buy-out plan, british paper the business said on sunday, revealed reuters. it said the plan would value the snack company, bought out in 2000 by a group of firms backed by french food giant danone, at up to £2.4 billion (€3.8 billion). united biscuits\' owners have already had discussions with advisers over a potential flotation of the group, and the kraft plan is now being considered as an alternative to a relisting in london, the paper said. more

nestlé's recycling practices revealed

nestle japan ltd, a japanese unit of food giant nestle, is using surplus stocks of old instant coffee products to make new products, industry sources revealed at the weekend, reports kyodo news . nestle japan released a statement the same day, claiming that it is reusing the unsold stocks of two products, instant coffee and powdered creamer, and that they both meet its rigorous safety and quality standards. more

a new method that establishes genetic markers for bacteria in water, food, and biological and medical samples could be used to detect terrorist contamination, or simply the bacterial contamination that causes food poisoning. the patented system, developed by researchers in israel, uses the genetic material in bacteria such as e. coli to quickly and accurately identify and \"fingerprint\" the bacteria. more

senomyx to 'discover' new flavours for nestlé

the fragrance technology company, senomyx, has signed an exclusive research and license agreement with swiss food group nestle to discover and produce new ingredients to enhance the taste of some of its consumer food products. under the agreement, nestle will provide research funding over a three-year period and additional payments will be made upon successful outcome of the research and also from royalties based on sales of products which use the new ingredients. more

regular tea consumption may help those who have suffered from a heart attack survive longer than those patients who are not tea drinkers, finds a study by american researchers. the research team at the harvard medical school, boston, noted that while previous research suggested the benefits of tea consumption among individuals with cardiovascular disease, the effects of tea consumption on mortality after heart attacks were unknown. more
