the us agriculture department, now investigating the second-largest meat recall in history, would gain authority to issue civil fines against companies that make unsafe food, under a bill introduced on thursday by three democrats. the legislation would also give the usda the authority to order a company to recall food suspected of contamination. currently, the usda can only urge a company to do so or threaten to pull federal meat inspectors out of a plant that refuses to cooperate.

british drinks giant diageo on thursday announced that it has completed the sale of burger king corporation to a private equity consortium, composed of texas pacific group (tpg), bain capital and goldman sachs capital partners, that is backing the fast-food firm's management. under terms of the agreement diageo will receive €2,260 million in cash for burger king corporation on a debt free basis and burger king corporation will retain a minimum level of working capital, which will include $15 million of cash.

peanuts are not normally considered a diet food - primarily because they are known to have a relatively high caloric level - but a new study in the us has shown that they can be an effective diet food because they act as an appetite suppressant. in what is claimed to be the first clinical study designed to confirm and explain a body of epidemiological data showing that nut-eaters tend to have a lower body mass index (bmi) than non-nut-eaters, researchers from purdue university in the us studied the effects of daily peanut consumption on dietary intake, satiety, energy expenditure and body weight.

the controversial herbal ingredient kava, kava is once again in the news when the uk food standards agency this week announced that it is seeking views on draft regulations that would result in the removal from sale of food products containing or consisting of kava kava. kava kava is a herb commonly found in remedies but also in some food products. evidence has emerged recently that products containing kava kava may have a toxic effect on the liver.
