a new artificial sweetener ingredient that claims to be 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar has won federal government approval. neotame from the us company nutrasweet was approved as a general-purpose sweetener that can be sprinkled on food or used in soft-drinks, baked goods, gum, processed fruits and a host of other food items. designated as a high-intensity sweetener, neotame was the subject of 113 animal and human studies that the fda reviewed before approving the product. more

taking vitamins to combat the effects of heart disease or cancer could be a waste of time, claim researchers from oxford university\'s clinical trial service. writing in the lancet , the team of researchers led by professor rory collins, said they had carried out a five year study involving more than 20,000 people and discovered that a daily dose of vitamin c, vitamin e and beta-carotene had no effect whatsoever on patients suffering from heart disease, cancer, cataracts, bone fracture or mental decline. more
