folic acid is not only a safeguard against spina bifida and other birth defects in babies - it can also prevent heart disease and strokes, two of northern ireland's biggest killers, according to research from the university of ulster released this week. researchers at the university claim that folic acid and three other related b-vitamins can prevent the accumulation of a high blood level of homocysteine, a risk factor in heart disease and strokes.

dutch life science company dsm, together with agennix, a us developer of recombinant human lactoferrin, has opened a new manufacturing facility on dsm's fermentation site in capua, italy. the facility, located just north of naples, is dedicated to the commercial production of pharmaceutical grade recombinant human lactoferrin (rhlf). rhlf is a protein found naturally in milk and other endocrine secretions and is believed to play an essential role in stimulating the body's immune system to fight cancer and infections, and protect against asthma and other allergic diseases.

british confectionery and soft drinks group cadbury schweppes agreed on tuesday to buy brau und brunnen's 72 per cent interest in the apollinaris & schweppes joint venture in germany for 151 million euros. the deal will give cadbury 100 per cent control of the joint venture, which was formed in 1991, and sells brands such as apollinaris heppinger and big apple soft drinks brands. cadbury said in a statement the purchase price will be funded from its own resources and the deal will be earnings positive from year two.

progress towards the founding of europe's food safety authority (efsa) has been closely followed by foodnavigator.com, including an interview this week with the freshly appointed spokesman for the efsa, andrew stimpson. as such, it was with interest this week that on the occasion of the first meeting of the new efsa board on wednesday, we read an article in the wall street journal on the subject.
