tapping into the ever-growing search for natural antioxidants to prolong the shelf-life of foods, researchers from portugal report that the leaves, flowers, and skins of chestnuts could be added to the list. researchers from the university of porto report that the outer skin of castanea sativa miller, the most commonly consumed chestnut, offers a rich source of polyphenols, compounds with potent antioxidant activity.

environmental campaigners urged the uk food standards agency (fsa) to improve its emergency system at yesterday's review meeting on the unauthorised gm rice incident. the meeting re-evaluated the fsa's handling of the discovery of the illegal ll rice 601, unapproved for human consumption, in american long grain rice supplies for export in august 2006. friends of the earth gm campaigner clare oxborrow said: "the incident revealed a vulnerability with the agency's lack of knowledge on the structure of the market and where the major food products went to.

cutting out the junk will be a major for manufacturers in 2008 said mintel in its prediction of trends to shape food for the next 12 months, as consumers buy into natural and environmentally-friendly products. the food industry has already made headway in removing artificial additives from products. indeed, data drawn from mintel's global new products database and communicated in september showed that more than a thousand new food products claiming to be additive- and preservative-free have been launched in the uk this year.

fine chemicals firm allylix is to get more than $3m worth of investment by a team of companies including tate & lyle ventures to produce cost effective plant extracts called terpenes. allylix, based in san diego, specializes in a process which allows terpenes - the class of natural hydrocarbons that give plants their characteristic flavours and fragrances - to be produced via fermentation in yeast.
