japan-based ajinomoto has experienced an increase in sales and income, particularly for its enzymes and flavour seasonings, according to its interim financial results released today. the maker of food seasonings, cooking oils, foods, drinks, and pharmaceuticals has achieved an operating income of ¥28.5bn (€174m) in the six month period, which is a 3 per cent increase from the previous interim period.

over the fourth quarter, sales increased 5% to $162.2 million from $154.1 million in the same period last year, while net earnings fell by 9% to $10.5 million, down from $11.5 million. earnings per diluted share were $0.55, compared to $0.61 in the comparable period a year ago, while operating income decreased 9% to $16.4 million, down from $18.1 million in 2006. for the fiscal year ended september 29, 2007, sales increased 11% to $568.

the european union regulator said in a statement: "the (european) commission's decision is conditional upon the divestiture of a range of spanish biscuit brands, a plant in spain and a hungarian chocolate bar brand." in order to meet the requirements outlined by the eu, kraft has vowed to offload a range of its spanish biscuit brands, including artiach, chiquilin, filipinos and marba dorada and one of its production plants in spain.
