the image of grains needs a fundamental makeover in order to encourage consumption globally, according to the r&d director of pasta firm barilla, who said the enduring perception of grains as 'empty' energy is the major hurdle that needs to be overcome. this perception, he said, has stayed with consumers since the days of the low-carb craze, and it is up to the grains industry to transform this image to one of 'relevant' and 'good' energy. more

danisco names flavours buyer: it's firmenich

danisco has cut a deal to sell its flavours division to firmenich that will let it focus resources on its bioingredients, texturants and sweeteners competencies - while still keeping some interest in flavours through a partnership with the buyer. danisco confirmed late wednesday that it was in negotiations over the sale of its flavour division, but throughout the business day declined to disclose any more details. more

raisio is starting to see the results of rationalisation measures with a q1 result that was back in the black - though work still remains before its food division regains profitability. the finnish food group has undertaken measures to improve profitability in the past year. restructuring in summer 2006 led to the loss of 65 jobs in an effort to save some €9m in 2007; then a further 24 jobs went in october, when the company shook up its margarine production. more

smoked, bbq meat linked to breast cancer

postmenopausal women who regularly consume smoked and barbecued meats may be increasing their risk of breast cancer by at least 50 per cent, suggests a new study. the study, published in the journal epidemiology , is said to be the first to report and association between lifelong consumption of such meat and breast cancer risk, and must be confirmed in many more studies. more
