using cloned animals for production of food such as meat and milk is not justified, say experts on ethics reporting to the european commission. just days after the european food safety authority (efsa) concluded in a draft opinion that such foods were unlikely to pose any risk to human health, the european group on ethics (ege) said that it did not see "convincing arguments to justify the production of food from clones and their offspring". more

efsa seeks experts for two new panels

the european food safety authority has started seeking experts to sit on its two new panels on food additives, flavourings, processing aids and food contact materials, following the decision to split the existing additives and food contact materials panel in two. efsa's management board proposed the split in september 2007, and the go-ahead to modify the authority's founding regulation was given by the standing committee on food chain and animal health in december. more

cole's quality foods uses chep pallets to transport food

cole's is using chep pallets to transport its branded and private label frozen garlic bread, bread sticks and pizza sticks from production facilities in muskegon, michigan and north liberty, iowa to supermarkets, club stores and foodservice distributors in the us. cole's had previously deployed one-way pallets and used a pallet exchange process to ship products to customers, but examination of the operation has revealed high transportation costs, inconsistent platforms and wasted resources in the form of trashed wood. more
