france one step closer to extending gm ban

the french government declared yesterday that it is willing to apply an eu measure to implement a long term ban on genetically modified (gm) crops if a scientific panel decides their safety is questionable. a temporary ban affecting commercial cultivation of gm crops was put in place by president sarkozy last october as part of plans to make france greener. it prevented new crops being planted until a more permanent decision on the environmental policy is made. more

lycopene may show benefits against benign prostate hyperplasia (bph), a condition said to affect more than half of all men over the age of 50, suggests a new study from germany. forty people took part in the new pilot study, which adds clinical data to an area previously lacking, according to the researchers in this month's journal of nutrition. epidemiological evidence has suggested that tomato-based foods can protect men from prostate cancer. more

using the asparaginase enzyme to treat french fries could reduce the formation of acrylamide by 60 per cent, a joint chilean-danish study has reported. the study, published on-line in the journal food chemistry, weighs into the hot topic of acrylamide reduction in fried foods, and supports the efficacy of novozymes' acrylaway derived from aspergillus oryzae , launched last year. more

vietnam pepper plant opens for business

indian spice processor vallabhdas kanji limited (vkl) has started commercial shipments from its new pepper plant in vietnam; it claims the new facility makes it the only processor in the main pepper-producing countries with steam sterilisation capabilities. this is a natural method of sterilisation using high temperature steam. it is often a preferred alternative to ethylene oxide (eto), which is a chemical method of sterilisation, and irradiation. more

aurora organic launches initiative to reduce carbon footprint

this research will be funded by the newly established aurora organic dairy foundation. the foundation's first grant of more than $320,000 will fund a long-term research partnership with the center for sustainable systems at the university of michigan's school of natural resources and environment. with the proceeds of the grant, the center will conduct lifecycle and sustainability research at aurora organic dairy's facilities. more

calavo growers q4 net sales surge
