german margarine and dressings manufacturer walter rau lebensmittelwerke has been acquired by agri-giant bunge europe in a deal that will help it meet raw material price challenges and expand into new markets. bunge, which has its headquarters in the us, has activities in the edible oils industry - as well as fertilisers, grains and milling. in addition, it also manufactures bottled oils, mayonnaise and margarines for consumers. more

consumers shun nutrition info for recycling instructions

consumers are more interested in seeing recycling information on food labels than fat, sugar and calorie information, according to a new survey from mintel, adding further fuel to the debate on what info should be presented and how. the consultancy conducted an online survey amongst 1,000 consumers aged 16 years and over. eighty-four percent of respondents said they now look at recycling details. more

dairy body claims natural trans fats not harmful

the european dairy industry says it is confident that there is significant research to back it claims that naturally occurring trans fatty acids (tfa) in milk pose no health concerns to consumers and do not need to be labelled on products. the comments followed last week's tfa policy conference, which was held by the european dairy association (eda) to debate whether there are sufficient nutritional differences between industrially formed and naturally occurring trans fats. more

the use of xylitol, a natural sweetener linked to dental health, could prevent the formation of undesirable brown pigments and enhance beverage formulations, suggests new research. in addition to protecting the anti-microbial properties of potassium sorbate, adding xylitol and aspartame to the system was found to produce a synergistic effect on sweetness intensity, states the report in the journal lwt - food science and technology . more

cadbury likely to hike prices

dunkin' donuts announces new franchisee

kainos partners plans to open more than 30 restaurants. the company's plans call for three-to-five units in 2008 and the balance within five years. kainos's first dunkin' donuts in columbia is scheduled to open in june in the lexington area. the remaining locations will open in the ft jackson base hospital, irmo and west columbia. in addition to columbia, kainos partners has an agreement to develop 37 restaurants in upstate, south carolina including greenville, spartanburg, anderson and clemson. more
