cadbury recalls all chocolate products made at beijing plant

british confectionery firm cadbury has recalled all of its chocolate products manufactured at its beijing plant as a precautionary step 'after monitoring' melamine-contamination events in china, the chocolate maker said this morning. eleven chocolate products exported to hong kong, taiwan and australia, have all been withdrawn from the market. "no other products and countries are affected," cadbury said in a statement. more

eufic publishes first results of eu labelling survey

most uk consumers are aware of guidance daily amounts (gda) and traffic light labelling, but only one-in-four actually looks for nutritional information, according to a new survey from eufic. there has been considerable debate over which is the best system, as new legislation on food information is being debated between the european parliament and the council, since the publication of the proposal at the beginning of this year. more

using animals, and specifically rats, to build the science behind ingredients is vital, but dismissing conflicting studies just because a rat is not a human is not acceptable. studies performed with rats and mice form a key component of any ingredient’s safety record, people’s views of animal testing aside. but promoting their validity when the news is good, and dismissing it when the news is bad does not constitute a level scientific playing field. more
