cargill beef tongue recalled over srm

the usda’s food safety and inspection service announced that cargill meat solutions corporation, a milwaukee firm, is recalling approximately 5,522 pounds of beef tongues that may not have had the tonsils completely removed. tonsils are considered a specified risk material (srm) and must be removed from cattle of all ages in accordance with fsis regulations. srms are tissues that are known to contain the infective agent in cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (bse), as well as materials that are closely associated with these potentially infective tissues. more

europeans prioritize health, wellness

consumers continue to see health and wellness as an important issue and will pay more for foods that display health benefits on their labels, according to tate & lyle’s latest european consumer research. the survey, conducted in july 2009, polled 1,565 people in germany, france, the united kingdom, spain and italy about their attitudes toward labeling, ingredients and shopping habits. research revealed that across europe, 53 percent of consumers often check nutritional information on-pack, and 57 percent check the ingredient list at the back of a packaging, confirming their interest in labeling to determine if a product is healthy. more

vatran's recalls 11,500 pounds of sausage

the usda’s food safety and inspection service announced that vatran's fine foods, inc., a tracy, calif., firm, is recalling approximately 11,500 pounds of assorted meat and poultry products because they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. the recall involves montibella sausage company and vatrans's brands of sausages produced on various dates ranging from march 2009 through october 2009 that were distributed to retail stores in the san joaquin valley area in california. more
