new england e. coli outbreak spreads

food safety news is reporting that an outbreak of e. coli o157:h7 in massachusetts associated with this week’s recall of 1,039 pounds of fresh ground beef patties is growing and now includes cases in connecticut, new hampshire and rhode island. to date, more than 30 school children and adults from rhode island have been sickened by e. coli, and five have been hospitalized after consuming contaminated meat during a field trip earlier this month. more

mom’s veggie intake decreases kid’s diabetes risk

expectant mothers who eat vegetables every day seem to have children who are less likely to develop type 1 diabetes, according to a new study from the sahlgrenska academy that was published in the journal pediatric diabetes. "this is the first study to show a link between vegetable intake during pregnancy and the risk of the child subsequently developing type 1 diabetes, but more studies of various kinds will be needed before we can say anything definitive," said researcher and clinical nutritionist hilde brekke. more

kraft makes sustainable cocoa commitment

kraft foods has said that its premium cote d’or chocolate brand will convert to the use of sustainable cocoa beans. beginning in france and belgium, cote d’or dark chocolate will contain cocoa sourced from farms that meet rainforest alliance sustainability standards. this programme will then be rolled out in the uk, germany, spain, hungary, poland, portugal, the netherlands, canada and the united states. more

the global probiotics council (gpc) has announced two $50,000 grants for young researchers in the field of probiotics. gpc, a committee formed by danone and yakult, is running the grant scheme for the third year in a row to encourage research into probiotics and gastrointestinal microbiota. “the quality of applicants and the caliber of science that we saw the past two years were exceptional and we expect to see the same this year as the level of interest in probiotics continues to rise with emerging science,” said sven thormahlen, executive vice president for r&d at danone research. more

arla unites r&d resources with new milk protein centre

arla food ingredients has opened a new application centre in aarhus, denmark, consolidating its r&d facilities as part of its plan to double milk protein sales by 2013. arla uses the milk and whey proteins that are by-products of its cheese-making process as textural and cost-cutting ingredients in a wide range of foods, including as a replacement for egg whites in muffins, or for casein in salami, as well as in dairy applications. more

the federal government’s food and health dialogue, which will provide a ‘framework for government, health groups and industry to work collaboratively across the food supply chain to improve dietary intakes’, was formally announced this week by the parliamentary secretary for health, mark butler. chaired by mr butler, the dialogue is part of a broader strategy to increase consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods; reduce the consumption of risk-associated nutrients, such as salt and saturated fat; and improve consumer awareness about healthy diet choices. more
