fonterra reports continued momentum in dairy market

fonterra has seen continued strength in milk prices via their internet-based sales platform, a further sign that the dairy market is recovering. the new zealand dairy giant concluded its globaldairytrade december trading event this morning with the average price for whole milk powder up 3.6%. the trading manager, cra international, advised fonterra that the average price achieved across all contracts and contract periods for whole milk powder (wmp) was us$3,560 per tonne fas. more

coca-cola amatil claims leading logistics award

australia’s largest soft drink manufacturer has been awarded the prestigious manufacturing logistics award at the supply chain & logistics association of australia’s recent national awards ceremony in melbourne. the award recognises the achievements of coca-cola amatil’s supply chain remodelling program ‘project jupiter’, which the company says has “substantially improved order fulfilment efficiency, reduced distribution and transport costs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions”. more

allied brands expects profits to surge in coming year

food franchisor and retailer allied brands has informed shareholders that its net profit will jump more than 20 per cent this year as the international expansion of its cookie man brand gathers pace. speaking at yesterday’s agm, allied brands ceo shane radbone forecast the company would record net profit before tax of between $6.6 million and $7.2 million for 2009/10. the forecast is 20 per cent to 33 per cent higher than the company’s 2008/09 result. more

uk regulator looking to food industry to cut salt, portion sizes

the uk food standards agency (fsa) has created a list of recommendations to the food industry designed to reduce saturated fat and to increase the availability of healthier options and smaller portion sizes in savoury snacks. meat products and dairy foods are key contributors of saturated fat and calories to our diet, the fsa noted. many savoury snacks have been reformulated to reduce saturated fat recently, but they remain a focus because they are often high in fat and calories. more

kraft the frontrunner for cadbury

kraft foods remains the favourite to buy cadbury, a leading industry analyst claimed today (1 december) even if us chocolate maker hershey tables a bid for the dairy milk maker. andrew wood, senior research analyst covering european food companies at sanford bernstein, said kraft was still the front-runner to buy cadbury. wood suggested, however, that a “likely” bid from hershey - either on its own or alongside ferrero or nestle - would mean an acquisition of cadbury would not be the “steal” that kraft had hoped. more

mcdonald’s coo retires

mcdonald’s has overnight announced that ralph alvarez has decided to retire as president and chief operating officer of the company for health-related reasons. “after more than 30 years in the restaurant industry, the past 15 with this great brand mcdonald’s, i’ve decided to retire,” alvarez said. “seven orthopedic surgeries and years of chronic pain culminating in two total knee replacements in the past six months have made me realise it’s time to move on. more
