italian scientists have identified a new member of the vitamin e family, extracted from kiwifruit ( actinidia deliciosa 'hayward'), according to results of a new study. writing in the journal food chemistry , researchers from the two neapolitan universities report the identification and characterisation of a compound called delta-tocomonoenol, which is an analogue of tocopherol.

carbery is investing in a two-year research project to identify the molecular and flavour profiles of whey protein to help improve on formulation. the irish-based ingredient supplier said it has commissioned the research at north carolina state university to characterise the inherent flavours present in its whey proteins and learn more about the relationship between flavour, manufacturing processes, storage and consumer responses.

ben & jerry’s has fessed up to creating an online presence for a fictitious company selling cloned milk as a publicity stunt, as campaigners believe that the offspring of cloned animals have already entered the food chain. in january 2008 the fda issued its scientific conclusion that meat and milk from cloned cows, pigs and goats and their offspring are safe, a decision that effectively made it legal for such produce to enter the food chain.

a newly enhanced food safety authority of ireland (fsai) website provides information on haccp as well as a section on ‘legislation’ which has links to all the irish and international food acts and regulation, claims the safety agency. the fsai said the site also has improved navigation tools, while the homepage contains a ‘feedback form’ and ‘make a complaint’ functionality to enable the agency, it claims, participate in two-way interaction with users and obtain feedback from stakeholders.
