food and beverage firm national foods has signed one of the largest logistics contracts in the australian food and beverage sector. the owner of the dairy farmers, yoplait, and pura brands announced the deal with linfox logistics yesterday, which will see linfox manage the majority of their australian national distribution for the next ten years. “worth up to $2 billion in revenue over ten years, this is one of the largest single contracts in the linfox logistics portfolio and in the australian logistics industry,” linfox ceo michael byrne said.

kraft foods has announced an 11 per cent hike in profits for the second quarter, topping estimates from analysts and leading to an upgrade of their full-year forecasts. revenues declined, however, pushed lower by unfavourable currency movements and divestitures of less-profitable brands but partially offset by higher prices and a small (0.2 per cent) rise in volumes. irene rosenfeld, chairman and ceo of kraft, said the company’s results highlighted continued momentum in a turnaround program that started a few years ago.

pepsico, one of the world’s largest food and beverage manufacturers, has announced an improved takeover offer has been accepted by the boards of their two largest bottlers. pepsi bottling group and pepsi americas, who both operate in europe, north america and central america, entered into definitive merger agreements with pepsico after initially rejecting the approaches of their major shareholder. this forced pepsico to offer just under a quarter more than their initial proposal to reap back control of their distribution system.

the u.s. senate approved a $125 billion budget for the u.s. department of agriculture (usda) and the u.s. food and drug administration (fda) to increase funds for farm subsidies and food safety. as reported by bloomberg news, fda spending would increase by 15 percent to $2.35 billion. combined, the funds allotted for both agencies would increase 11 percent from the current fiscal year. the measure resembles the $123.

researchers at the university of chicago medical center have found that combining eight ounces of grapefruit juice with the anti-cancer drug rapamycin can increase drug levels, allowing lower doses of the drug to be given. they also showed that the combination can be effective in treating various types of cancer. “grapefruit juice can increase blood levels of certain drugs three to five times,” said study director ezra cohen, md, a cancer specialist at the university of chicago medical center.
