the need for a blanket ban on advertising unhealthy food on pay and free-to-air tv prior to 9pm has been disputed by the advertising watchdog. the australian communications and media authority (acma) believes that the recommendation, seen in a report released yesterday by the preventative health taskforce, lacks the research to support it. speaking upon the release of acma’s standards for advertising to children, chris chapman, chairman of the acma, said that the regulator had maintained its initial view not to implement further general restrictions on food and beverage advertising.

the world’s largest dairy exporter continues to see signs of recovery in the dairy market following a tumultuous year during which prices plummeted. fonterra’s internet-based sales platform, globaldairytrade, concluded its september trading event this morning with average prices for whole milk powder surging 24.2%. the trading manager, cra international, advised fonterra that the average price achieved across all contracts and contract periods for whole milk powder (wmp) was us$2,858 per tonne fas (a$3463).

consumer reports blind taste tests found 23 private label brands tasted as good as, or better than, their big national brand competitors in tests of 29 food products. "our tests should erase any lingering doubts that store-brand packaged goods aren't at least worth a try. in many cases, you'll save money without compromising on quality," said tod marks, senior project editor, consumer reports shopping.

delhaize group, the belgian international food retailer, has completed the sale of its four stores operated in germany to the german retail group rewe. reportedly, in december 2008, delhaize group decided to start the divestiture process of its four german stores, which resulted in an agreement to sell these activities to rewe in july 2009. the company said that the divestiture of the four german stores to rewe has been approved by the german antitrust authorities and as a result, the earlier announced transaction has been closed.

burger king is taking its french fries beyond the fast food counter with a new product launch, in partnership with conagra foods. retailers like walmart will carry the bk-branded fries, which are produced via a licensing agreement with conagra’s lamb weston brand. lamb weston frozen potatoes and appetizers are sold in both retail and foodservice outlets. king krinkz “seasoned, crinkle-cut fries” will hit shelves this month, and an extra large version, king kolossalz, and king wedgez, will be introduced in stores in the coming months.

campbell revamps chunky soup line sept 2, 2009 campbell soup co. is rolling out what it calls the most comprehensive set of enhancements in its chunky soup line’s 40-year history. the camden, n.j.-based manufacturer is now offering 23 chunky soups with both a full serving of vegetables and 100 percent lean meat. “extensive research revealed men today are facing what we call a ‘male meal dilemma’ -- they’re having trouble finding convenient, satisfying foods that taste good and that they feel good about eating,” said michael j.
