ethical labels and schemes may become too closely associated with big brands that use them and discourage competitors from adopting them too, participants in a two tomorrows roundtable heard. consultancy two tomorrows, which this year published its first tomorrow’s value rating on food manufacturers’ sustainability initiatives, hosted the roundtable in london in september. it has identified some 600 ethical certification labels and schemes currently on the market.

eu member states have reached an “informal agreement” over a raft of key food labelling measures, such as country of origin and nutritional information, ahead of a key meeting next tuesday. consumer ministers from the 27 eu member state are expected to sign off on the draft regulation that appears to give food companies broad discretion on how they display information on food packaging.

premier foods has announced it is in advanced talks with two potential suitors regarding the sale of its meat-free business, including quorn. it has been reported that nestlé, the world\'s biggest food group, are one of the firms to have a hunger for the meat-free division - with suggestions of a 230 million pounds (€270 million) bid. premier foods said there was no guarantee a sale would take place, but confirmed that it has received bids from “a number of parties, including multinational food groups and private equity firms.

all lamb, pork and poultry sold in the eu will have to carry country-of-origin labels, according to an “informal” deal struck by member states. health ministers from the eu member states will meet on tuesday (7 december) to formally agree on the plan, a brussels official told just-food today. the deal on country-of-origin labels forms part of the ministerial response to plans to reform food labelling in the eu.
