tate & lyle has announced a major shake-up of its business, shifting focus to specialty food ingredients and away from its traditional sugar business. the announcement by tate & lyle’s new chief executive javed ahmed came as the firm reported that profits before tax for the year ended 31 march 2010 fell 7 per cent to £229m (€271m). sales were down 1 per cent, reaching a total of £3,506m (€4,144m) for the year.

cargill is planning to build a new chicken processing facility in russia so it can supply locally rather than shipping from france. cargill’s contract to supply chicken nuggets to mcdonalds in russia is instrumental to the decision, as mcdonalds has recent decided to source locally in the country. the plant, at cargill’s complex in efremov, 330km south of moscow, will cost some us$30m.

the royal irish academy (ria) elected paul ross, the head of food research at teagasc for admission today (4pm, friday, 28 may 2010) in recognition of his academic achievement. this is the academy’s 225th admission of new members since it was founded in 1785. paul ross was among only 24 academics on the island of ireland to achieve this highest academic distinction. professor nicholas canny, president of the ria, said that this group ‘is as accomplished and as academically diverse as any cohort elected since our founding members signed the roll in1785’.

a major step towards establishing a single food research programme in ireland to support innovation and development in the food industry was taken today with the launch of the ucc/teagasc strategic alliance in food research. this new alliance moves collaboration between the two organisations in food science and technology to a new level, through the sharing of resources, working to a joint research programme and the establishment of a single portal for food companies to access international quality research and innovation.
