members of the european parliament have voted to put back clauses on nutrient profiling into the proposed food information regulation, after environment committee members voted to take them out – but it was a close call. nutrient profiles define what products can make claims relating to nutritional content, based on their levels of fat, sugar or salt. the idea is that a product that is exceptionally high in one of these nutrients that should be consumed in moderation, it may not be labelled a ‘low in fat’, say, or ‘low in sugar’. more

higher blood levels of vitamin b6 may reduce the risk of lung cancer by about 50 per cent, says a new analysis of almost 400,000 people, including current and former smokers. researchers also report that the amino acid methionine, which is found in most protein, may also reduce the risk of lung cancer. “given their involvement in maintaining dna integrity and gene ex­pression, these nutrients have a potentially important role in inhibiting cancer devel­opment, and offer the possibility of modi­fying cancer risk through dietary changes,” wrote the authors in the journal of the american medical association . more

hovis recalls hearty oats loaves

eu withdraws plans for rules on organic wine production

the eu commission has withdrawn draft proposals to introduce standards for the production of organic wine, citing an unwillingness to dilute organic rules. wine has so far been excluded from the eu organic regulation, which only extends to the grapes used in wine production. organic wine has therefore been marketed only as wine produced from organic grapes. draft proposals had been under consideration within the standing committee on organic foodstuffs and a number of bilateral meetings to develop specific standards for organic wine. more

a us legal public interest group has filed violation notices under a californian safety law against dozens of companies after alleging it has detected levels of lead in a range of food and drinks for babies and children. the environmental law foundation (elf) said it has lodged the notices on 9 june, 2010, under the state’s proposition 65 toxic right to know law against 49 companies. more
