basf is constructing what it calls the world’s largest plant for the mint aroma l-menthol, which it will start to supply as a flavouring agent to the global food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical markets. the new plant, which will be located at the firm’s ludwigshafen site in germany, is due to go on stream in 2012. l-menthol is an aroma chemical produced on the basis of citral.

the proposed acquisition of cognis by basf is reported to be entering its end game with a deal ‘agreed in principle’, according to reports. financial times deutschland (ftd) reports that the main conditions of the deal and the price have been agreed, but no announcement is expected before the middle of this month. the paper cites people “familiar with the talks”. last month reuters reported that cognis’ co-owners permira perm.

bunge may increase the capacity of its rapeseed oil plant in germany as it rebuilds after a fire in its preparation building, but production will be halted for 15 to 18 months in the meantime. fire swept the preparation room of the plant in mannheim, germany, on 26th april, and although it was controlled within a few hours and noone was injured, production at the site was halted immediately.

the risk assessment framework for nanotechnology in europe – like so much else connected to the technology – appears to be in its infancy but developing at a rapid pace. in its opinion issued in spring last year, the european food safety authority (efsa) sought to lay down an overarching system to use as a risk assessment framework for nanotechnology – but was clear that much currently remains unknown about nanomaterials and how they behave in food and packaging.

health and wellness positioning based on growing consumer awareness of inherent properties such as antioxidants along with provenance is proving a market driver in the adult soft drinks sector as it navigates the challenges posed by eu health claims regulation, claims a mintel analyst. “in some parts of europe, particularly in spain and germany, we now quite commonly see products with antioxidant flashed on their labels as a way of quite quickly attracting the consumer to the fact that this is a health positioned adult juice drink,” said david jago, mintel’s director of innovation and global insight.
