corn products international has said the federal trade commission (ftc) has given initial approval of its $1.3bn acquisition of national starch, with the deal expected to be finalized by early october. in june, corn products international agreed to buy national starch, a wholly owned subsidiary of dutch specialty chemicals and coatings company akzo nobel. there had been uncertainty at national starch since 2007 when akzo nobel acquired its parent company ici for $8bn to boost its presence in the fast-growing coatings market.

the us can manufacturers institute is inviting the world to celebrate the two hundredth birthday of the food can on august 25 2010. it traces the advent of the food can to the patent granted to british inventor peter durand on august 25, 1810 for his idea to store preserved food in tinplate vessels. two hundred years later, there are more than 600 sizes and styles of cans being manufactured, according to the institute.

us food and edible oils giant cargill ended its fiscal year with a fourth quarter in which its profits more than doubled, the company announced this week. cargill posted fourth-quarter net earnings of us$691 million for the three months to the end of may, up from $327 million a year ago. excluding the results from fertilizer firm the mosaic co., in which cargill owns a majority stake, fourth-quarter profits were up 87%.

us food and drinks giant pepsico said its latest investment in vietnam will take its planned expenditure in the country to us$400 million (a$445.8 million) between 2008 and 2013. pepsico yesterday (16 august) committed us$250 million (a$278.6 million) to the country over the next three years in a bid to increase its manufacturing capacity, introduce new products and “strengthen” its existing brands.
