uk-based rectory foods has opened a new facility in lithuania to source, store and distribute meat and other ingredients to baltic countries. rectory foods, which has recently expanded its ingredient offering from just meat into garlic, seeds and vegetable products, has been carrying out research and preparatory work towards opening the new facility for the last 2 years. it says the division, called uab baltreka, complies with british retail consortium standards.

the european commission has upgraded the high level group on competitiveness in the agri-food industry to a high level forum which will pursue and report on progress towards the group’s 30 recommendations. the agro-food sector is of strategic importance to the eu, representing 2 per cent of gdp and 13.5 per cent of employment in manufacturing. however the playing field has shifted in recent years.

the uk’s food standards agency (fsa) has said it is investigating claims that milk from a cloned cow has entered the nation’s dairy supply. the announcement comes after an unnamed dairy farmer told the international herald tribune that he was using milk from a cow bred from a clone as part of his daily production. fsa said that this would need to be considered for ‘novel food’ approval before it can be sold in the market.

nestle has boosted its clinical nutrition activities, this morning announcing its acquisition of a uk-based manufacturer of tailor-made food products for people with inherited metabolic disorders. vitaflo, which was acquired for an undisclosed sum, makes products for infants, children and adults with genetic disorders that affect how food is processed by the body. “this sector is growing rapidly as improved diagnosis and screening enable increasing numbers of cases to be detected, and new advances in science demonstrate the benefits of specialised nutrition as an integral part of clinical management,” said nestle in a statement.

a new swiss company has been formed called wild flavors gmbh, bringing together the global food ingredients companies that bear the wild name under a new structure. dr hans-peter wild, scion of the wild family which owned epenheim, germany-based rudolf wild gmbh & co since its foundation in 1931, sold some shares to asset manager kohlberg, kravis, roberts and co (kkr) in january this year.

energy drinks makers risk a regulatory clamp down if they fail to take action on marketing campaigns that irresponsibly target young consumers. concerns about excessive consumption of ingredients like caffeine and taurine has already prompted a german motion to impose mandatory warnings on energy drinks at an eu level. the commission rejected the move but momentum is building for tighter regulation across the globe.

italian dairy giant parmalat has seen its first-half profits slide on the back of a fall in settlements from legal cases linked to its 2003 bankruptcy.parmalat, which has so far recovered about eur2bn (us$2.6bn) from banks and auditors it accused of participating in the fraud, said late last week that its net profit reached eur147.4m for the first six months of 2010 - down from eur247.8m a year earlier.
