labor proposes national food plan

federal minister for agriculture tony burke today announced that an elected labor government would introduce a national food plan, to examine food security, food quality, the affordability of food and the sustainability of food in australia. the initiative would not require new funding, but instead come out of the regional food producers innovation and productivity program budget. “this is a first for australia and will integrate all aspects of food policy by looking at the whole food chain, from the paddock to the plate. more

uk’s food watchdog probes cloned cow milk claims

the uk’s food standards agency said yesterday it would investigate reports that milk from the offspring of a cloned cow has gone on sale in the country. an anonymous uk farmer told the international herald tribune he was producing milk from a cow bred from a clone as part of his daily milk output. the farmer requested anonymity for fear of buyers no longer taking his milk, the newspaper said. the eu said two years ago that there was “no clear evidence” of any difference in safety between products from cloned or conventionally-bred animals. more

dsm ‘record’ results boosted by nutrition

dsm today reported what it calls the best quarter in its history, with operating profit almost tripling compared to last year. key drivers behind the strong q2 results were effective cost savings, favourable currency exchange rates, a continued focus on pricing and some downstream re-stocking, said the dutch ingredients firm. “operating profit increased by more than 25 per cent compared to the first quarter and for the current business portfolio it was the best quarter in dsm\'s history,” said feike sijbesma, chairman of the dsm managing board he added, however, that the company remains “vigilant about the broader macro economic developments”, and in this environment the company says its focus on cost generation and cost savings continues to be important. more

efsa needs more data on furan formation in foods

the european food safety authority is urging member states to step up monitoring of the carcinogen furan in food products, in a bid to amass enough data to inform a dietary risk assessment. furan is an organic compound with aromatic properties which has been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies. it can form during the heat-treatment of food products, and contributes to the taste and smell of a prepared food product. more

solae: efsa soy-cholesterol opinion is “disconcerting”

leading soy supplier solae has criticised the european food safety authority (efsa) for a selective approach that saw the agency’s health claims panel dismiss upward of 30 human intervention studies contained in an article 14, soy protein, cholesterol-lowering dossier. “it is disconcerting that the efsa panel considers the studies cited and analysed in nine peer-reviewed meta-analyses (based collectively on the existing soy protein and cholesterol literature) to not be designed appropriately to assess the effects of soy protein on cholesterol lowering,” the company said. more

industry challenges ‘misleading’ sweetener-premature birth study

a study linking consumption of artificially sweetened beverages to an increased risk of preterm births has been dismissed by the sweetener industry as ‘misleading’ and ‘not plausible scientifically’. according to findings published in the american journal of clinical nutrition, pregnant danish women who consumed at least four servings of artificially sweetened carbonated soft drinks per day were at a 78 per cent higher risk of preterm birth than women who did not consume any soft drinks. more

study supports concerns over meat additive-cancer link

a new epidemiological study has reported modest support for suggestions that some components in processed meat may increase risk of bladder cancer. consumption of red- and processed meat has previously been linked to an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer, and animal studies have indicated that certain compounds could be behind the purported link. these compounds include nitrites and nitrates, which are added to processed meats as preservatives and to enhance colour and flavour and break down into n-nitroso compounds, as well as heterocyclic amine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. more

blue mozzarella bacteria not harmful to humans, said germany

the bacteria strain responsible for turning thousands mozzarella cheese blue blue earlier this summer does not pose a human health hazard, said german authorities. the german federal institute for risk assessment (bfr) said the risk from the family of pseudomonad bacteria that spoiled up to 70,000 mozzarella cheese balls was low - although it did render the food unfit for consumption. more
