around 1.2 million farmers and workers around the world are estimated to have benefited from fairtrade certification and labelling schemes in 2009, says flo, with coffee still the largest category. the fairtrade labelling oraganization (flo), which represents 23 certifying organisations and owns the fairtrade mark that signifies that the standards underlying it have been met, this month published the second edition of its monitoring and evaluation report entitled the benefits of fairtrade.

researchers have found a way of extracting large quantities of bluefin tuna eggs – a discovery which, if commercialised, could boost food supplies and ensure sustainable management of the endangered fish species. the positive results were announced last week by the european commission and stem from a €2.98m eu funded project. biologists working on the selfdott project, coordinated by the spanish institute of oceanography, found that tuna could adapt to favourable breeding conditions within three years of domestication and produce some 10 million eggs per day.

government funding cuts in the uk for the change4life campaign and school meals threaten children’s health, say campaigners who are also increasing scrutiny on the role of food manufacturers. the uk’s department of health (doh) launched change4life on 3 january, with the first airing of tv, billboard and poster ads. the campaign is aimed at families with children under 12, and the tv ad, also available on youtube, compares a cartoon stone-age family hunting for their food to a modern family playing video games.

nestlé reports that an upgrade to its premium chocolate manufacturing facility in the samara region of russia will transform it into a key competence centre for confectionery products in europe. two production lines from a moscow plant owned by nestlé are being transferred to its confectionery union rossiya factory, in a move that will create 149 new jobs, said the swiss group.

lowering the cost of hot water on dairy farms 30 august 2010 a new energy research project at the teagasc animal & grassland research and innovation centre, moorepark, aims to reduce the irish dairy farmers’ electricity consumption and hence their carbon footprint. evaluation of new technology such as the use of more efficient cooling technology for milk tanks, solar panels, heat pumps and variable speed vacuum and milk pumps is underway in both laboratory and field experiments.

young people are being encouraged to ‘open their minds’ to a career in agriculture, with the launch of a new information brochure by wa agriculture and food minister terry redman at the dowerin field days.mr redman said the ‘open your mind: careers in agriculture’ origami-style brochure sought to inspire upper school students to consider the vast range of career opportunities in agriculture. “there are so many different, dynamic careers young people can pursue in agriculture,” he said.
