industrial chocolate supplier barry callebaut has secured a key, long-term supply contract with kraft foods, which will see the swiss firm invest €51m to expand production capacity in north america, the ivory coast, malaysia and europe. the two companies announced the signing of a ‘long-term global master product agreement’, which means that the swiss supplier will more than double its existing business with the us food group. more

iron fortified infant foods may not be delivering

infant formula fortified with ferrous fumerate may not be providing as much iron as first thought, according to a new study. in a special article written for the journal nutrition reviews, prof. richard hurrell reports that iron enriched complementary foods, designed for infants and young children need to be looked at in greater detail, in order to assess if they are delivering enough iron to deficient children. more

danes propose stricter eu labelling for energy drinks

a recent proposal from denmark is pushing for stricter eu requirements on the labels of energy drinks. at the moment, energy drink labels must state that the beverage contains a high level of caffeine, but the proposal, made by the danish food minister henrik høegh is for an eu-wide requirement for stricter labelling. eu label changes the proposal, made on 7 sept 2010 in brussels, aims to deliver better information to children and parents about the drink’s caffeine content. more

fosters rejects $2.7 billion private equity bid on treasury wines

fosters announced yesterday that it has recieved and rejected an unsolicted expression of interest, from an international private equity firm, to acquire its wine business treasury wine estates. the offer comprised a ‘cash consideration of between $2.3 billion and $2.7 billion for 100% of the assets’ of treasury wine estates. “after considering the value range in the proposal, the board of foster’s continues to consider that a separation of the wine business from the beer business through a demerger is most likely to represent the best outcome for all foster’s shareholders,” said a release by the company. more

pepsico starts us electric truck roll-out

pepsico’s frito-lay north america division will begin rolling out fully-electric delivery trucks in new york. the company plans to deploy 21 electric trucks this year and projects it will roll out 155 more trucks in 2011, making it the largest commercial fleet of all-electric trucks in north america. the trucks have been designed by smith electric vehicles to generate zero tailpipe emissions and operate for up to 100 miles on a single charge. more

preventative health report calls for junk food tax

a new report by the university of queensland and deakin university has highlighted the need for preventative health, recommending a 10% junk food tax, salt limits in bread, margarine and cereals, increase alcohol tax, a ban on alcohol ads and an increased drinking age of 21. the assessing cost effectiveness of prevention (ace-prevention) project is the result of five years of research, funded by the national health and medical research council. more
