a wide-ranging regulation that would see the overhaul of rules governing food contact plastics in the european union (eu) has taken a major step towards becoming law later this year. the proposed regulation known as the plastic implementation measure (pim) was approved by the eu’s council of ministers just before christmas. the meeting, held in brussels on 20 december, agreed not to oppose draft regulation 14262/10 – which was subject to regulatory procedure with scrutiny.

governments need to implement reforms and promotions to make organic products more attractive to convenience- and price-driven consumers if the organic market is to increase substantially, says a new study. the research, led by dr ulf hjelmar from the institute of governmental research, denmark, identified two main ‘concepts’ to explain organic produce purchase habits : convenience behaviours and reflexive practices influenced by political or ethical considerations.

nestlé has sold its russian confectionery division, altai confectionery, in a reported bid to focus on its core brands, according to media reports. private company corminus enterprises, which is headed by former nestlé executive of the swiss food giant, igor kubanov, is reported to have acquired the business from nestlé for an undisclosed sum, according to just-food.com. the transaction is expected to be closed in the second quarter of 2011.
