fish consumption hits all time high: fao report

global fish consumption has reached its highest ever level of about 17 kg per person on average, supplying more than 3bn people with at least 15 per cent of their average animal protein intake, according to a new report from the food and agriculture organization (fao). fuelling the rise was the strong growth of aquaculture which is set to overtake capture fisheries as the main source of fish. more

french millers urge ec to alleviate wheat supply pressures

the french milling association (anmf) has asked the minister bruno le maire to momentarily suspend import duties on wheat to avoid supply disruption. the anmf fears that the remaining wheat stocks will not be secured in case of late harvest due to various difficult climatic conditions in countries such as australia, canada and russia. bernard valluis, president of the anmf told foodnavigator. more

study links trans fat intake to depression

the ingestion of trans fats may increase the risk of depression, whilst healthier oils such as polyunsaturated fatty acids and olive oil may reduce the risk, according to a new spanish study. the study, based on results from the sun project – consisting of over 12,000 spanish volunteers – found that participants with the highest level of trans fat consumption had up to a 48 per cent increase in the risk of depression compared to those who did not consume these fats. more

scientists dismiss claim that early exposure to cow’s milk boosts tolerance

a group of german scientists have published a paper dismissing the suggestion that giving newborns cow’s milk could help promote dairy tolerance. writing in the journal of allergy and clinical immunology, the scientists replied to an earlier article in the same journal that had recommended early exposure (journal of allergy and clinical immunology vol. 126, pages 77 – 82). the authors of the original study, which was based on the self-reporting of the parents of some 13,019 infants, concluded that “supplementation at birth with cmp should be recommended to promote its tolerance. more

mas-river fried dace with salted black beans recall update

tins of mas-river branded fried dace are being recalled by the uk importer oriental merchant (europe) ltd, because the product is from an unapproved establishment in malaysia and high levels of histamine have been found in one batch of tins. high levels of histamine can cause scombrotoxic fish poisoning if eaten. the agency has issued a food alert for action asking all authorities that may have distributors or retailers of this product in their areas to take action. more
