the first part of a european ban on bisphenol a (bpa) in baby bottles comes into force tomorrow in what brussels hailed as a ‘landmark’ move to safeguard consumer health and safety. european union directive 2011/8/eu prohibits the manufacture of infant bottles containing the chemical from 1 march. the second part of the regulation, due to come into force on 1 june, will outlaw the marketing or selling bpa-containing bottles within the economic bloc.

a federal appeals court in san francisco has overturned a previous ruling to destroy genetically modified (gm) sugar beets, ruling in favor of monsanto and the us department of agriculture (usda). permits had been issued to four companies allowing them to plant monsanto’s roundup ready sugar beets, but those permits expire on february 28, not allowing the plants to flower and produce seed, meaning they are unlikely to cross-pollinate with non-gm plants, the court ruling said.

royal dsm has kicked the integration of its new €800m wholly-owned subsidiary, martek biosciences corporation, into life by establishing a special integration unit to manage the us-dutch-swiss deal. martek is now a fullly-owned dsm subsidiary “planning for the integration of dsm and martek started when the deal was first announced in december and now a full scale integration of the two businesses will begin,” the company said.
