one in five parents find it difficult to encourage children to consume three serves of dairy a day, a newspoll children & dairy survey commissioned by dairy company, fonterra, has found.parents in nsw and victoria find it the most difficult at 29 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. teenagers are least likely to consume three serves of dairy, with 16 to 17 year olds at 26 per cent followed by 13 to 15 year olds at 24 per cent.

sara lee yesterday (8 february) posted a slump in underlying quarterly profits as rising commodity costs hit earnings.the us food group, which plans to split in two next year, booked net income from continuing operations of us$107m for its fiscal second quarter, which ended on 1 january. in the previous year’s second quarter, the figure stood at $298m. on a reported basis, sara lee’s net income was $882m, up from $376m a year ago.

a venture run by australian sugar processors bundaberg sugar and maryborough sugar factory is to close a mill in northern queensland. the northern milling joint venture, owned by bundaberg and maryborough, yesterday (8 february) announced plans to close its babinda mill. the company said it will transfer operations to its mulgrave and south johnstone mills and that it would identify opportunities to “redeploy” as many of the 62 employees at the site “as practicable”.

a single test capable of identifying nine different sweeteners and their dosages in drinks and packaged fruits has become a european standard. the jrc test method can measure nine different sweeteners simultaneously the european committee for standardisation (cen) has approved the test to measure levels of sweeteners in foodstuffs as a european standard (en 15911:2010). this means that the test will be used by national standard organisations in the eu as well as croatia, iceland, norway and switzerland to evaluate sweetener levels in both imported products and food from within the eu.

food contact materials are an underestimated source of chemical contaminants and a “potentially relevant route of human exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (edc)” such as bisphenol a (bpa), according to new research. the study by jane muncke also raises questions over the accuracy of commonly used testing methods to measure leaching of substances from food contact materials (fcms) and suggests that children’s exposure is not “always realistically predicted”.

world food prices surged to a new historic peak in january, for the seventh consecutive month, according to the updated fao food price index, a commodity basket that regularly tracks monthly changes in global food prices. the index averaged 231 points in january and was up 3.4 percent from december 2010. this is the highest level (both in real and nominal terms) since fao started measuring food prices in 1990.

private-equity firm pai partners has confirmed that it has received nine bids for its 50% stake in yoplait, the global yoghurt brand. a statement from pai and fellow yoplait shareholder sodiaal did not mention the candidates by name but said the group of bidders comprises industrial and financial groups that are french and foreign in origin. pai and sodiaal will decide in the \"coming days\" which of the candidates will be invited to take part in the second stage of the bidding process, the statement added.

consumer acceptance of nanotechnology hinges on finding answers to a number of questions regarding its safety, benefits, and regulatory oversight, says a new paper in the journal of consumer affairs . the article, by us department of agriculture economist jean buzby, of the department’s agricultural research service, outlines some of the key questions that still surround the use of nanotechnology in food which, without answers, could stand in the way of successful commercialization of the technology.
