recycled cardboard food packaging: cancer link?

swiss scientists have linked cardboard packaging made from recycled newspapers to health complaints in lab rats, ranging from the inflammation of internal organs to cancer.researchers at the food safety laboratory in zurich said that mineral oils in ink from newspapers that are then recycled can make their way into foods such as cereal, pasta and rice - even passing through inner plastic bags. the researchers analysed a total of 119 products bought from german supermarkets last year. more

eu health platform opts for “flexible approach” as obesity rises

ten years after the first european commission reports were handed in, with little in the way of demonstrable obesity-reduction results, the european union platform on diet, physical activity and health is taking “a flexible approach” over coming years to tackling obesity rates that continue to rise in most of the bloc’s 27 member states. despina spanou, special advisor to the european commission’s director general for health and consumers (dg sanco), told a congress in brussels last week that the platform needed better working methods and that individual member states were being given the flexibility to develop these. more

chilean flavour firm enters european market

study identifies new tomato allergen

a previously unknown allergen found in the peel of tomatoes has been identified by a team of spanish researchers. the study, published in food chemistry, found that the newly identified allergen, known as arp60s, is related with allergic sensitisation and shows immunoglobulin e (ige) binding capacity – ige is the predominant antibody associated with an allergic response. “the capacity to bind ige has been suggested in different tomato proteins but new allergens, related probably with different populations, are now under study … we have identified a new tomato allergen with high homology with previous known and described allergens from moulds and almond,” said the researchers, led by maria angeles lopez-matas, from laboratorios leti, spain. more

efsa establishes new adis for caramel colours

the european food safety authority (efsa) has concluded that caramel colours are not carcinogenic or genotoxic, and there is no evidence that they have adverse effects on human reproduction and child development. the risk assessor is in the midst of a safety review for all food additives previously approved for use in the eu, as new science has been published since many were originally approved, in some cases as far back as the 1960s. more
