united biscuits to encourage more suppliers to use ethical data exchange

united biscuits’ (ub) is aiming to increase the number of its suppliers signed up to the supplier ethical data exchange (sedex) system to 80 per cent by the end of 2011, the firm said in its recent sustainability report. from the beginning of 2011, 64 per cent of the firm’s raw material and ingredient suppliers have been signed up to a working group in sedex. through the web-based reporting system, sedex gives international food manufacturers the opportunity to agree on a consistent approaches and requirements for ethical standards across the joint supply chain. more

belgian supplier puratos says its undisclosed acquisition this week of 17-year-old latvian fruit fillings firm, pure food, is about expansion into the central and eastern european and nordic regions – and the supermarket channel - but its artisanal customer base needn’t worry it is abandoning them. puratos is impressed by the modernity of pure food\\\'s operation company spokesperson pascale jantcheff told foodnavigator the move matched the company’s strategy to develop its presence in the supermarket channel, something pure food, which employs 167 people, is strong in. more

premium ingredients has launched two new products for uht chocolate milk, created to stabilise cocoa particles, avoid sedimentation and improve mouthfeel. premitex xlb-6020 is specifically recommended for uht chocolate milk made from reconstituted milk. a product for low cost formulas, the ingredient is made from a blend of emulsifiers, carrageenan and guar gum. the other ingredient, premigum xlb-11009, is recommended for uht chocolate milk made from fresh milk and is created from a specific blend of microcrystalline cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and carrageenan. more

afgc joins choice in calls for supermarket ombudsman

accc not to oppose cellarmasters sale to woolies

the australian competition and consumer commission has announced that it does not intend to oppose woolworths limited’s proposed acquisition of the cellarmasters group. the accc said it had concluded that the proposed acquisition would be “unlikely to substantially lessen competition given the presence of several significant competitors in wine retailing, production and associated services”. the competition regulator said it had consulted widely with competitors, suppliers and customers of the merger parties as well as relevant industry associations. more
