global dairy prices take a dip in march

global dairy prices were down 2.4 per cent from march after seven months of steady growth, according to the latest figures from the food and agriculture organisation (fao). fao’s global dairy price index, which consists of butter, skimmed milk powder (smp), whole milk powder (wmp) and casein price quotations, dropped to an average of 229 points, following an average of 234 in february. more

sweeteners have key role in sports drinks formulation

the use of low and no calorie sweeteners in the food industry is rising rapidly. however one product area that has always relied on the use of sweeteners is in the formulation of sports drinks, says professor john brewer. speaking with foodnavigator, john brewer professor of sport and sports science at the university of bedford, uk, said that sweeteners play a vital role in creating the perfect balance between taste, fuel and hydration in a sports drink. more

aak plans more ‘rationalisation’ to focus on specialty products

aak is taking its rationalisation to a new stage in q2 2011 as it repositions away from commodities towards higher value-lower volume specialty food ingredients. the rationalisation will cost around sek 40m to be billed under the q2 results but will bring annual savings of sek30m from q2 2012. it was announced in this week’s q1 results report. the company has not released details of what exactly this process will entail; but it comes on top of ongoing productivity improvements in the scandinavian units. more

the agency has today published updated practice guidance for the food law code of practice. the practice guidance takes into account developments in enforcement since the previous version was published in 2006. the practice guidance has updates on: the role of primary authorities guidance on quick frozen food, bottled water, phosphate testing and imported foodinterventions, including interventions types and alternative enforcement strategiesnewly registered establishments interpretation of the code of practice annex 5 for food standardswild game and small quantities in addition, a number of revisions have been made to the official forms contained in the guidance and references to legislation, web links and contact details have been updated. more

nutritionist warns responsibility deal could hit healthy food sales
