mccormick has announced a deal to acquire polish flavour company kamis for 830 million polish zloty (approximately 208 million euros), as the company looks to push in the eastern european market. the global flavour company said that it has signed an agreement to purchase 100 per cent of the shares of kamis s.a, a privately held company based in poland with distribution into russia and other parts of central and eastern europe.

the food industry is under fire again for advertising foods high in fat, sugar and salt (hfss) to children and this time competition is being blamed. a so-called “civil war” between european food manufacturers is leading to large numbers of promotions and advertisements about these foods being aimed at children, according to the author of a new eu-funded study published today. this is despite voluntary pledges from leading companies that such marketing efforts would cease, said the report: “a junk-free childhood: responsible standards for marketing foods and beverages to children”, published by the international association for the study of obesity.

nestle france has launched an immediate investigation after recalling more than 30,000 containers of baby food over fears of glass contamination. the food giant said it had ordered the recall as a precautionary measure after a mother discovered a piece of glass in a container of its p’tit pot brand of baby food. the company said some 34,000 pots of the product made in the same batch were being recalled and advised consumers who had purchased the affected run not to use them.

nestle has won a court appeal against a swiss discounter making coffee capsules as it pursues legal action to protect its nespresso brand in several countries. this week the swiss federal supreme court ruled in favour of the swiss food giant, sending a case against the swiss discounter denner back to a lower court. nestle claims denner\'s coffee capsules violate its trademarks as they are the same shape as its nespresso brand\'s own offerings.

kraft foods is encouraging the indian government to develop a comprehensive cocoa production development policy, claiming domestic supplies are too poor and scant to fuel its growing needs. atul bhatia, executive director for research and innovation at cadbury’s indian subsidiary, stressed in an interview with just-food that while cocoa is an essential part of his company’s business, imports are often essential.

coca-cola amatil has launched its new bottle preform and closure facility at eastern creek in victoria, a $57 million investment in its beverage manufacturing capability. the new plant, which uses injection moulding technology, will manufacture plastic bottle caps and pet resin “preforms”, which are test-tube shaped moulds used to manufacture cca’s pet plastic beverage bottles. cca said the eastern creek facility is the final stage in cca’s vertical integration of its manufacturing facilities in australia and new zealand.
