codex debate over biotechnology definition goes full circle

after years of debate around the issue of labelling of genetically modified or engineered foods the codex committee on food labelling has decided to abandon work on a definition of the term biotechnology. it had been argued by some that adopting a compilation of codex texts did not go far enough to give the needed guidance on labelling of gm/ge foods and that a definition was still needed in the standard as it made reference to biotechnology in relation to allergens. more

new citrus flavours aim to add signature notes to branded drinks

kerry has launched a new range of natural citrus flavours that aim to quench industry thirst for signature twists in branded drinks. the new flavours include some from unusual citrus fruits including kusiae and rangpur types, which are hybrids between mandarin orange and lemon. other unconventional flavours in the range include one from the meyer lemon, a fruit named after the agricultural explorer frank meyer, and another from pomelo, which is the largest citrus fruit, with a flavour resembling mild sweet grapefruit. more

adm-led project aims to boost indonesian cocoa quality

leading cocoa processor archer daniels midland (adm) has announced it is kick-starting its ivory coast sustainable cocoa initiative – serap – in indonesia in a bid to boost cocoa quality from growers in that region. indonesia is the third largest cocoa growing nation in the world, with growers in sulawesi the target of the programme, said adm. a spokesperson for the cocoa processor told confectionerynews. more

first market uptake of round table’s responsible soy

the first batch of soy produced according to the principles of the round table on responsible soy (rtrs) has hit the market after years of planning. eighty five thousand tons of the soy was purchased by the initiative for sustainable soy (ids), a group of dutch food, retail and feed companies, in what is described as a “certification milestone” on the path to building a responsible international soy chain. more

eusalt backs environmental “megatrends”

the european salt producer’s association, eusalt, has pledged its support to what it described as environmental “megatrends” with water a key issue. the association had affirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability last year at its general assembly but for 2011 it has pushed it up the agenda as a priority. nutrition was also high on the agenda at eusalt’s recent annual meeting, with the aim of highlighting the importance of having a balanced approach to diet and healthy lifestyles. more

dsm inks enzyme joint venture agreement in china

dsm has signed a joint venture agreement with a chinese biotechnology company that will give the dutch ingredients supplier its first enzyme manufacturing plant in china. the agreement between dsm and yixing qiancheng bio-engineering will result in the creation of a new company, dsm (jiangsu) biotechnology, based in yixing, jiangsu provence. employing around 70 people and consisting of a manufacturing plant, lab facilities and a warehouse, the new joint venture will produce enzymes for brewing, bakery and other food products in china. more

eu flags up defects in indian rice export system

flaws in administrative arrangements and the lack of legal basis for controls mean there is no guarantee that indian basmati rice exports comply fully with european union aflatoxin limits, said a report from brussels. the food and veterinary office (fvo) announced its findings after a carrying out a nine-day visit to india to assess aflatoxin control measures on exports. the european commission safety watchdog also found positives in india’s oversight systems - including a raft of administrative procedures, as well as mandatory sampling and analysis measures that met european standards. more

cdc reports no progress on salmonella in 15 years

the incidence of salmonella has not decreased in 15 years – and has increased by 10 percent in recent years, according to a new report from the centers for disease control and prevention (cdc). however, the cdc ’s latest vital signs report, which documents foodborne illness outbreaks in 2010, was not all bad news; cases of e. coli o157:h7 have been nearly halved and the rates of six foodborne infections are down by 23 percent, the report said. more

european commission ups e.coli compensation to €210m

the european commission has increased it offer of compensation to vegetable producers hit by the deadly e.coli outbreak by almost 50 cent after its original proposal was rejected. agriculture commissioner dacian ciolos announced that €210m would now be made available – compared to the €150m proposed on tuesday. \"in total we will have a budget of €210m which will be earmarked for the measure. more
