agro-waste could provide nano-fibres for probiotics encapsulation

waste fibres from the agricultural and food processing industry could be used for the nano-encapsulation of bioactives such as probiotics, according to new research. the study, published in the journal of agricultural and food chemistry, explored the potential for using soluble dietary fibre from agro-wastes such as okara (soybean solid waste), oil palm trunk, and oil palm frond (leaf and foliage) for the nano-encapsulation of the probiotic lactobacillus acidophilus. more

wrigley backed study shows gum could reduce snack craving

chewing gum reduces cravings for sweet and salty snacks in between meals, and could aid appetite control, according to researchers. this study, which was funded, in part, by the wrigley science institute and published in the journal appetite, concludes that chewing gum for at least 45 minutes suppresses hunger, appetite and cravings for snacks as well as promoting fullness. the authors, based at the institute of psychological sciences at the university of leeds said that their study demonstrated that in “participants who are moderately restrained eaters, who are motivated to lose weight or maintain weight loss, chewing gum reduced desire for and intake of highly palatable sweet and salty snacks. more

eu validates test methods for sports drinks contaminated with plasticiser

the european commission\'s joint research centre (jrc) has published three methods to detect an illegal clouding agent that was found earlier this year in sports drinks imported from taiwan. producers of sports drinks , jelly and fruit pulps commonly use a palm-oil based product to obtain a cloudy appearance, but in the taiwan ese incident, manufacturers had instead used bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate ( dehp ) and - in one case - di-iso-nonyl phthalate ( dinp ). more

‘grey nomads’ emerging as rural workforce solution for australian agriculture industry

the australian agricultural industry is looking to “grey nomads” as the answer to rural australia’s labour shortage. grey nomads are the descriptor used for retirees typically aged in their 60s or older who travel around australia. many are now performing seasonal work on farms to sustain their travels. across the rural sector, the number of grey nomads in seasonal employment is currently around 15 per cent, but this is predicted to rise to as high as 60 per cent of seasonal labour in the next 20 years. more
