vitafoods asia trade expo will open its doors for the first time in hong kong to an expectant region in coming days – a culmination of more than two years work by the organisers of the show that has its foundation in europe. director of both events, chris lee, told shane starling why the organisers were so pleased to have attracted a multinational and intra-regional throng of more than 100 exhibitors and 2000 visitors so far, with registrations open until the show ends on september 9. more

ajinomoto reports toxicology data to support advantame safety

the high intensity sweetener advantame is not associated with any adverse effects, according to a toxicology study over two generations of rats conducted by ajinomoto. results published in food and chemical toxicology indicated that the no-observed-adverse-effect level (noael) for reproductive and developmental toxicity was determined to be 50,000 ppm, which was equivalent to between 4 to 6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. more

frutarom profits dip as raw material costs rise

israel-based flavours, botanicals and speciality ingredients player frutarom has reported lower profits in q2, with raw material hikes cited as the principal cause. q2 net profit drop from $13m (€9.08m) to $12.3m (€8.6m) as frutarom dealt with cost increases in many of its manufacturing materials, although it has in turn also raised prices on its own outputs. but president and chief executive officer ori yehudai said the company remained on track to double revenue in four years with emerging markets increasingly important to deliver the highest growth. more

food standards australia new zealand (fsanz) is consulting the general public on whether permission should be given for raw milk (non-pasteurised) products to be sold in australia. fsanz is calling for public comment on its proposal p1007, looking at permissions for raw milk products to be sold in australia. however, fsanz has recommended permission apply only for the non-pasteurised hard to very hard cooked curd cheeses. more

tasmanian attempt to ban new zealand apples

the state of tasmania is seeking to maintain import restrictions on new zealand apples. the move comes despite the fact that regulator biosecurity australia yesterday gave the green light to the importation of new zealand apples into australia. last year, the world trade organisation (wto) found australia’s biosecurity and quarantine standards stopping new zealand apples exported to australia to be in breach of wto rules. more
