new obesity research revises the weight loss assumptions

new research on obesity, published today by the world-renowned medical journal the lancet, has revealed that, for decades, dietitians and doctors have been basing weight-loss advice on mistaken assumptions. the results of one study reveal how most weight-loss programs have overemphasized the importance that energy intake has on weight-loss. a research team led by kevin d. hall, phd, of the national institute of diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases in maryland, usa, found that whereas patients are often advised that cutting 500 calories a day will allow them to lose one pound a week, the reduction for a 50-pound loss of weight would require three or more years, rather than 12 months. more

mcdonald’s and hungry jack’s to continue giving away toys with children’s meals

two of australia’s largest fast food chains, mcdonald’s and hungry jack’s, will not be following kfc’s lead by removing toys from their children’s meals. both told australian food news that they will continue to provide toys with their children’s meals. mcdonald’s australia’s skye oxenham said, “we don’t have any plans to remove our toys. mcdonalds australia has already done a lot in terms of introducing healtheir options to happy meals. more

global obesity levels calculated by australian researchers

new research by professor boyd swinburn and gary sacks, with the world health organisation collaborating centre for obesity at deakin university, melbourne, has found that global obesity rates began to rise in the 1970s, and that by 2008 an estimated 1.46 billion adults were overweight while a further 502 million were obese. the research paper concludes that the changes needed are likely to require many sustained interventions at several levels, but that national governments should take the lead. more

accc takes action against victorian meat suppliers for ‘king island’ origin claims

the australian competition and consumer commission (accc) has instituted legal proceedings in the federal court, melbourne, against two victorian meat retailers alleging false and misleading representations about meat claimed to originate from king island, tasmania. the accc alleges that hooker meats pty ltd trading as ‘peninsula bulk meats’, misrepresented in newspaper advertisements and on their website that meat they supplied was grown on king island. more
