we can lower our risk of heart disease significantly, just by using flour containing 40 per cent lupin beans in the place of conventional wholemeal flour, according to research by victoria university dietitian dr regina belski and colleagues from the university of western australia. over the course of a year, working with the centre for food and genomic medicine in perth, researchers monitored more than 100 overweight, but otherwise healthy, western australian men and women, to whom they provided everyday foods made either with wholemeal flour or incorporating lupin flour. more

kellogg gets federal warning after listeria found in cookie plant

kellogg co has been censured by the us food and drug administration (fda) after traces of listeria monocytogenes were found littered throughout its cookie plant in georgia. listeria found at kellogg cookie plant in a warning letter to the food giant, federal authorities outlined a raft of “serious violations of the current good manufacturing practice regulations” following an inspection to the augusta site in february 2011. more

quorn to focus uk campaign on dieters

quorn foods has announced plans to focus its marketing budget on educating consumers about the vegetarian meat-substitute range’s health benefits. the company said last week that it plans to spend some gbp 6 million (a$9.25 million) over the next 18 months driving quorn’s “core benefit”, which chief executive kevin brennan said is “enabling consumers to eat their favourite meals but healthier”. “with their help we can continue to revitalise the quorn brand and take it from being quirky and niche to aspirational and normal,” said brennan. more

german e. coli death toll rises to 35

the number of people killed by the e. coli outbreak in germany has risen to 35 - although officials have claimed that the number of new cases of illness is showing signs of falling. the robert koch institute said today yesterday that 35 people had died from either the ehec o104:h4 e. coli strain or the hus syndrome that, in some cases, has led from the contamination. a further 3,228 have fallen ill from the outbreak, which the institute believes is linked to contaminated bean sprouts from a farm in the state of lower saxony. more

eu-wide nanotech register vital to ensure safety, says body

brussels should step in to break the decade-long deadlock over the setting up of a mandatory registry for nanomaterial-containing products, said the european trade union institute (etui). the body has called on the european commission to use its regulatory muscle to force industry players across a raft of sectors – including food, packaging, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals – to disclose which of its products are made up of nanomaterials . more

following weeks of uncertainty, germany said friday that beansprouts are almost certainly the source of the deadly outbreak of e.coli 0104:h4 that has killed 35 and sickened 3,256. e.coli culprit confirmed a joint statement from the country’s food safety, disease control and risk assessment agencies declared it had been able to “to narrow down the cause of the outbreak with a high degree of epidemiological certainty to the consumption of sprouts”. more

european commission ups e.coli compensation to €210m

the european commission has increased it offer of compensation to vegetable producers hit by the deadly e.coli outbreak by almost 50 cent after its original proposal was rejected. agriculture commissioner dacian ciolos announced that €210m would now be made available – compared to the €150m proposed on tuesday. \"in total we will have a budget of €210m which will be earmarked for the measure. more
