the us department of agriculture's food safety and inspection service (fsis) became aware of the problem on july 15 when the agency was notified by the california department of public health (cdph) of a small e. coli o157:h7 cluster of illnesses with a rare strain as determined by pfge subtyping.
after further review, cdph added another patient from february to the case count, bringing the count to seven. fsis is continuing to work with the cdph and the company on the investigation. persons with signs or symptoms of foodborne illness are advised to contact a health care provider.
the products subject to recall are various types and sizes of: beef patties; smashburger; beef chuck patties; soy patties; beef soy patties; retail patties; bigger valley burger; bigger valley burger; black angus burger; safeway 73/27 retail boxes; safeway 73/27 patties; safeway 80/20 patties; ground beef; hearst patties; and hearst ground beef.
the products subject to recall bear the establishment number 'est. 8268' inside the usda mark of inspection as well as a production code of 25709 through 01210. these products were produced between the period october 2, 2009 and january 12, 2010 and were distributed to retail outlets and institutional foodservice providers in california, texas, oregon, arizona and internationally.

french meat processor covial has recalled 3.8m tonnes of fresh minced steaks and minced meat supplied to carrefour and casino outlets amid an e-coli scare. the recall came after an inspection by covial revealed contamination by the escherichia coli o157h7 bacteria. covial issued the recall after the expiry date for the products had passed. the recall was specifically aimed at consumers who had perhaps stored the products in deep-freezers. more
