europe helps drive nestlé waters’ sales growth

nestlé waters saw strong 5.8 per cent organic growth over the first six months of 2011 due partly to double digit sales in certain european markets. the company’s water segment saw sales of chf 3.4bn (€3.2bn) over the first half of the year, with a 8.6 per cent rise in trading operating profit margin. in a conference call, roddy child-villiers head of investor relations said pricing had turned positive in the second quarter after a year of reducing brands. over all of its segments the firm saw a 13 per cent profit drop, as currency and material costs took their toll. nestlé said trading in the first half of the year had been tough, with sales in the six months falling to chf41bn, from over chf55bn last year. however the company stuck to forecasts that sales would rise in the full year. double-digit growth french and belgian markets performed well for nestle waters, reporting double-digit sales. germany and eastern europe also achieved good growth, along with italy and the uk, reported the firm.

dupont has asserted its commitment to the hydrocolloid business it acquired when it bought danisco after speculation that it could be sold. the us chemical giant has apparently written to imr international’s hydrocolloid expert, dennis seisun, after he suggested that dupont might want to divest danisco’s hydrocolloid business. seisun’s comments were reported in a foodnavigator.

sara lee has entered an agreement to sell its north american refrigerated dough business to fellow us food group ralcorp holdings. the two companies said today (9 august) that ralcorp would acquire the business for us$545m. it manufactures a range of private-label products including biscuits, crescent rolls, pizza and pie crusts and toaster pastries, which are sold to food and mass retailers. sara lee announced in may this year that it was evaluating strategic options for the business, which employs around 700 people and generated revenue in excess of $300m in fiscal 2010.

archer daniels midland company (adm) has announced that it will expand its cocoa processing capabilities at its facility in singapore to enable it to keep pace with growing demand for cocoa and chocolate products from asian markets. “the expansion of our operations in singapore marks an increased investment in asia, which is an important market for our cocoa business,” said yeong chye, managing director of adm cocoa asia.

kraft, in its second quarter results, reports continuing the challenges ahead for its gum and candy division lie in developed markets, and claims the cadbury takeover is a fundamental earnings driver, with its global chocolate earnings up 9 per cent. net revenues for the food giant were $13.9bn, up 13.3 per cent. kraft foods north america posted earnings increase of 2.5 per cent while kraft foods europe “continued to generate strong top- and bottom-line momentum in the quarter” to show a hike in revenues of 26.

cargill value added meats retail has initiated a voluntary recall of about 36 million pounds of ground turkey products because of possible salmonella contamination, although there is still no conclusive evidence of the outbreak source, the company has said. the division of wichita, arkansas-based meat processing firm cargill meat solutions corporation said on wednesday that it was recalling all fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at its springdale, arkansas facility from february 20, 2011 to august 2, due to possible contamination with salmonella heidelberg – a multi-drug-resistant salmonella strain that has been linked to one death and at least 76 illnesses across 26 states.
