coca-cola to invest us$4 billion in china

the coca-cola company and its chinese bottling partners today announced a new investment of us$4 billion over the next three years, commencing 2012. by the end of 2011, coca-cola and its china bottling partners swire beverages ltd. and cofco coca-cola beverage co. ltd. will have invested more than $3 billion in china over the last three years, bringing the total investment to $7 billion between 2009 and 2014 in the largest and fastest-growing consumer market in the world. chairman and ceo of the coca-cola company, muhtar kent said,”china is one of our most important growth markets in the world as we work to achieve our 2020 vision goal of doubling system revenues and servings this decade. “besides our infrastructure and capabilities, the new investment will also focus on enhancing the consumer experience, ensuring product affordability and building brand loyalty which deliver sustainable growth.” in the first six months of 2011,coca-cola’s sales in china topped 1 billion unit cases - double the rate sold five years ago when the company first delivered 1 billion unit cases for a full year. “china had an outstanding performance in the latest quarter, supported by strong growth in the coca-cola brand and minute maid pulpy, the no. 1 juice brand in china,” mr kent said. “these achievements are driven by a renewed focus on core brands, continued distribution gains and expansion of cold drink equipment, all made possible by our continued investment and dedicated execution over the years.” kent said that the coca-cola china system opened five plants in urumqi, nanchang, wuhan, luohe and hohhot in 2009-2010. in 2011, the system has already opened a new plant in sanshui (guandong province), will open another plant in yingkou (liaoning province), and break ground on a new plant in shijiazhuang (hebei province) later this year. with the recently opened plants, the coca-cola system now operates more than 40 plants in china employing more than 48,000 people. consumption of coca-cola products in china now represents approximately 7% of the company’s global volume. -->

kfc australia will no longer provide toys with its childrenʼs meals. the fast food chain says the move will encourage its customers to make “more responsible food choices”. kfc australia’s corporate affairs manager, zac rich said, “for three years now, kfc has taken a very clear position to not advertise or actively promote our childrenʼs meals but this is the next step in removing so-called pester power at our stores altogether.

australia’s largest supermarket chain, woolworths limited, today reported an increase in net profits after tax (npat) of 5.1% for the year ending 26 june 2011. woolworths’ outgoing ceo michael luscombe anticipated trading over the next year to be “subdued”, due to falling consumer confidence. commenting on the company’s full-year results, published today, woolworths ceo michael luscombe claimed the company’s profit increase to be a “sound result” given the “particularly challenging” retail environment in australia over the past year.

the australian food and grocery council (afgc) has applauded the decision by the federal government to oppose the food standards amendment (truth in labelling palm oil) bill 2011. the afgc is now urging the coalition to follow suit. tabled into the australian parliament as a private member’s bill by independent senator nick xenophon, the legislation was rejected by a senate committee in july, but passed by the australian federal senate through an alliance between independent senator nick xenophon, the greens and the coalition.

cargill’s drive to secure a good quality and sustainable supply of cocoa beans is filtering down to famers in cote d\'ivoire as it has just made premium payments totalling more than us $2.2m. the cash boost is the second of its annual sustainable certified cocoa premiums that are being made to 26,500 farmers across 21 cooperatives in cote d\'ivoire. it was made for the delivery of 20,000 tonnes of utz certified and rainforest alliance cocoa between october 2010 and may 2011.

in its latest move to fend off a takeover bid by multinational brewer sabmiller, australian brewing giant foster’s group limited plans to return a$500 million to its shareholders through a share buyback or capital reduction. as well as announcing the buyback bid, foster’s today released its full year results which show an 8.7 per cent fall in profit and a net loss of a$89 million for the year to june 30 2011.
