cargill’s drive to secure a good quality and sustainable supply of cocoa beans is filtering down to famers in cote d\'ivoire as it has just made premium payments totalling more than us $2.2m. the cash boost is the second of its annual sustainable certified cocoa premiums that are being made to 26,500 farmers across 21 cooperatives in cote d\'ivoire. it was made for the delivery of 20,000 tonnes of utz certified and rainforest alliance cocoa between october 2010 and may 2011.

in its latest move to fend off a takeover bid by multinational brewer sabmiller, australian brewing giant foster’s group limited plans to return a$500 million to its shareholders through a share buyback or capital reduction. as well as announcing the buyback bid, foster’s today released its full year results which show an 8.7 per cent fall in profit and a net loss of a$89 million for the year to june 30 2011.

woolworths limited has recruited the current ceo of tesco malaysia as its new director of australian supermarkets and petrol. tjeerd jegen, 40, has held store operations, commercial, marketing and general management roles with three leading international retailers in seven countries. he was chief operating officer for tesco thailand before his appointment as ceo in malaysia, in early 2010. woolworths limited deputy ceo grant o’brien said, “whilst an external appointment might be viewed as an unusual one for woolworths, tjeerd is an exceptional retailer capable of adding significant value.
