analysts at investment bank liberum capital said they expect unilever to sell its food arm, excluding the ice cream and beverage category, for an estimated figure of €14bn. any such deal would be used to fund a large acquisition in its home and personal care businesses, according to a liberum capital report on why now is the right time to buy unilever stock. authors pablo zuanic and lisa hau said: “we expect unilever at some point to implement a large accretive acquisition in the hpc (household and personal care) space and to partly fund it by selling it’s the food unit (excluding ice cream and beverages) which we estimate can be sold at about one times sales (or €14bn).

uk beverage giant diageo has paid $16m (€11m) to settle bribery charges against it by the us securities and exchange commission (sec). sec, in a cease and desist order, said london-based diageo offered bribes of $2.7m across india, thailand and south korea, violating the us foreign corrupt practices act (fcpa). diageo and its subsidiaries failed to properly account for the ‘illicit’ payments in their books and records, said the sec.

taiwan has said it would intensify checks on imported products into the country after a batch of concentrate for a coca-cola product was found to contain a preservative banned in the country. two weeks ago, a batch of concentrate for coke zero, which was being exported from china to taiwan, was banned in taiwan for containing methyl para-hydroxybenzoate. consumption of methyl para-hydroxybenzoate, an antiseptic chemical, is said to lead to stomach upsets and raise female hormone levels.

sainsbury’s has withdrawn its own-brand freefrom stem ginger cookies with a ‘best before’ date of 23 december 2011, because the product has incorrectly been packed with sainsbury’s freefrom chocolate chip cookies that contain soya. this means the product is a possible risk for anyone who is allergic to soya. the agency has issued an allergy alert advising anyone with an allergy to soya not to eat this product.

firmenich and the renewable products company amyris are expanding their joint collaboration to work on three “key” ingredients but they continue to keep the industry guessing about what they are. amyris said this week that the success of its initial collaboration with the swiss-based flavour and fragrance house for two ingredients had led to the early expansion into a third. under the initial agreement, firmenich was to fund technical development at amyris to produce a “sustainable, cost-effective and reliable source of a key ingredient for the fragrance and flavour market”.

belgian sweeteners firm nutrilab is scaling up production of tagatose following regulatory approvals. the company said its plant was capable of producing 5000 tonnes per year, with 70% tagatose crystals and 30% tagatose syrup, and was set to kick into life following the sweeteners eu approval recently and health claims wins. “the last tests and revisions are under way,” said christian m vastenavond, phd, director r&d nutraceuticals and international operations.
