emmi has entered an agreement to acquire swiss cheese manufacturer rutz kase. the swiss dairy group announced today (6 july) that the move will \"reinforce emmi\'s position as the leading cheese supplier in switzerland and as an exporter of swiss cheese\". rutz kase expects to generate chf40m (us$47.7m) in sales during 2011, of which around 60% is expected to come from switzerland. however, emmi ceo urs riedener emphasised the importance of rutz kase\'s operations outside its home market.

the french food ingredient manufacturer savena has been snapped up by european private equity company, ik investment partners (ik), with plans to double its size within five years. ik has agreed to acquire savena from azulis capital and céréa capital for an undisclosed sum and final closing is expected within four weeks, subject to conditions. the equity firm’s current portfolio of companies in the food industry already includes some of savena’s existing customers.

nestlé has confirmed it is in talks about a possible takeover of chinese confectionery company hsu fu chi.the world’s largest food maker said yesterday (4 july) that it was “engaged in preliminary confidential discussions” with the chinese firm. nestlé declined to comment further. in a notice to the singapore stock exchange, hsu fu chi had said yesterday (4 july) that it was in “preliminary discussions” in relation to a “possible transaction relating to the company, which may or may not lead to an offer being made”.

bakkavor has opened its first factory in canada uk-based own-label supplier bakkavor has opened its first factory in canada. the 70,000 sq ft plant, based in the town of cobourg in ontario, has started to supply one of canada\'s \"largest grocery retailers\", bakkavor said. the company declined to name the retail customer. products made at the factory include italian and asian meals, soups and side salads.
