irish food and agricultural group origin enterprises has decided to spin off its consumer food business in the country to focus on farming. origin, in which switzerland-based bakery group aryzta owns a 71% stake, has teamed up with private-equity firm capvest to create valeo foods group, a business that will own brands like odlums and shamrock baking ingredients. origin will take a 45% stake in valeo, while capvest, the private-equity firm behind companies like frozen-food giant findus group, will control the rest of the business.

dairy giant arla foods said today (10 september) that the town of aylesbury will be the home for its 1bn litre liquid milk dairy in the uk. the group first indicated plans for the mega dairy back in november and, after looking at potential sites, said the facility would be based in the buckinghamshire town. arla said the dairy, which is set to get up and running in 2012, will be a \"zero-carbon operation\".

foster\'s, australia\'s largest brewer, this week rejected a private equity offer worth up to $2.5 billion for its underperforming wine business as too cheap, but did not identify the name of the bidder. a source briefed on the situation said cerberus capital management was the mystery firm that made the offer for the world\'s second-largest wine business. other private equity firms are also potentially interested in the wine unit, including kkr and tpg, industry sources familiar with the situation said.

carrefour has reportedly dropped tesco and aeon from the bidding for its businesses in three south-east asian markets. according to the wall street journal, the remaining bidders reportedly include carrefour\'s french peer casino and ptt pcl, an energy company that has convenience stores at its gas stations. other bidders are thai retailers big c, which casino part owns and central group, as well as thai fmcg firm berli jucker pcl.

two people were killed at a kraft foods plant in philadelphia last night (10 september) after a woman reportedly started shooting employees inside the facility. reports have claimed that the suspect was a kraft employee who had been suspended from her job yesterday evening - and then returned to the plant in north-eastern philadelphia with a handgun and began shooting. according to the philadelphia inquirer, the suspect has been identified by employees as yvonne hiller, who had worked at the snacks plant for 15 years.

origin and capvest further announce that valeo, in which origin will have a 45 per cent equity shareholding, has reached conditional agreement to simultaneously acquire 100 per cent of the branded food business of origin (‘origin foods’) and the irish food company batchelors (‘the transactions’). the transactions are subject to a number of conditions including clearance from the irish competition authority.

during the land search, aylesbury emerged as the front‐runner giving the best overall logistics solution to service arla’s customers, when considering both raw milk collection from farm and finished product to the retailers. it also provides the best access to a densely populated area. when it announced its intention to build the new facility in november 2009, arla referred to it as being the most ‘environmentally advanced in the world’ and today confirms its plans to establish the dairy as a zero carbon operation.

pepsico last night announced its inclusion in the 2010 dow jones sustainability world index and the dow jones sustainability north america index (djsi world and djsi north america) and its position as sustainability leader in the beverage sector.pepsico has been named as a member of north america index five times and the world index four times in recognition of the company’s economic, environmental and social performance.
