pepsico\'s uk and ireland unit today (1 july) claimed it had made \"good progress\" on meeting a series of health targets the food and drinks maker set last year. in an update on how pepsico had performed since the targets were published last march, the company said it had cut the level of salt in walkers crisps by 11.7% and \"delivered 1.9bn servings of wholegrain\" - above a goal of 1.7bn. however, the company admitted it had not met certain targets including plans to launch and \"take to scale\" children\'s lunchbox and breakfast products that met ofcom\'s nutrient profile by 2010.

kraft foods has appointed former procter & gamble executive daniel myers as executive vice president, supply chain. myers, 56, will join the us food company in september and lead the functional groups that make up its integrated supply chain, including procurement, manufacturing, engineering and customer service and logistics. he succeeds david brearton, who is now executive vice president and cfo.

nestle has recalled bottles of its p\'tit pot baby food range in france due to a possible broken glass risk. the company said today (30 june) that it was recalling banana-flavoured p\'tit pot sold in lots of two 80 gram jars. the company did not confirm how many jars the it would be recalling, although reports in the french press suggested that some 34,000 containers are being recalled. a nestle spokesperson said the recall was limited to france.

a review process is under way at kerry\'s oakhampton sitekerry group has started a consultation process with staff at a food ingredients site in the uk over plans to potentially close the facility. employees at the plant in okehampton in devon were informed on friday that a review process is under way. full consultation with the 100 employees started on monday. a spokesperson for kerry group told just-food today (30 june) that the decision to potentially close the site, which makes fruit used in confectionery and branded cereals, is based on the firm\'s growth plans.

ireland’s kerry group has lifted its target for volume growth from 2013 as the company set out its forecasts for its next five-year cycle. the company, which owns a variety of food businesses in australia, set out a target yesterday for its annual like-for-like volumes to rise 3-5% between 2013 and 2017. the company’s current aim is for like-for-like volumes to climb by 2-4% a year but it expects that growth to accelerate.

coca-cola amatil has launched its new bottle preform and closure facility at eastern creek in victoria, a $57 million investment in its beverage manufacturing capability. the new plant, which uses injection moulding technology, will manufacture plastic bottle caps and pet resin “preforms”, which are test-tube shaped moulds used to manufacture cca’s pet plastic beverage bottles. cca said the eastern creek facility is the final stage in cca’s vertical integration of its manufacturing facilities in australia and new zealand.

kraft foods is encouraging the indian government to develop a comprehensive cocoa production development policy, claiming domestic supplies are too poor and scant to fuel its growing needs. atul bhatia, executive director for research and innovation at cadbury’s indian subsidiary, stressed in an interview with just-food that while cocoa is an essential part of his company’s business, imports are often essential.

the food industry is under fire again for advertising foods high in fat, sugar and salt (hfss) to children and this time competition is being blamed. a so-called “civil war” between european food manufacturers is leading to large numbers of promotions and advertisements about these foods being aimed at children, according to the author of a new eu-funded study published today. this is despite voluntary pledges from leading companies that such marketing efforts would cease, said the report: “a junk-free childhood: responsible standards for marketing foods and beverages to children”, published by the international association for the study of obesity.

nestle has won a court appeal against a swiss discounter making coffee capsules as it pursues legal action to protect its nespresso brand in several countries. this week the swiss federal supreme court ruled in favour of the swiss food giant, sending a case against the swiss discounter denner back to a lower court. nestle claims denner\'s coffee capsules violate its trademarks as they are the same shape as its nespresso brand\'s own offerings.
